Time management is basically about being focused. The Pareto Principle, also known as the ’80:20 Rule’, states that 80% of efforts that are not time managed or unfocused generates only 20% of the desired output.

However, 80% of the desired output can be generated using only 20% of a well time managed effort.

Although the ratio ’80:20′ is only arbitrary, it is used to put emphasis on how much is lost or gained. <b r />

Some people view time management as a list of rules that involves scheduling of appointments, goal settings, thorough planning, creating to do lists and prioritizing.

These are the core basics of managing your time that should be understood to develop an efficient personal management skill. These basic skills can be fine tuned further to include the finer points of each skill that can give you that extra reserve to make the results you desire.

But there are more skills involved than just the core basics. Skills such as decision making, inherent abilities such as emotional intelligence and critical thinking are also essential to your personal growth.

Personal management involves everything you do. No matter how big or how small, everything counts.

Every new piece of knowledge you acquire, each new bit of advice you consider, each new skill you develop should be taken into consideration.

Having a balanced life-style should be the primary goal in maintaining your time management. This is the main aspect that many practitioners of personal time management fail to grasp.

Managing your time is about getting results, not about being busy.

The six areas that will be improved in anyone’s life are physical, intellectual, social, career, emotional and spiritual.

The physical aspect involves having a healthy body, less stress and fatigue.

The intellectual aspect involves learning and other mental growth activities.

The social aspect involves developing personal or intimate relations and being an active contributor to society.

The career aspect involves school and work.

The emotional aspect involves appropriate feelings and desires and manifesting them.

The spiritual aspect involves a personal quest for meaning.

Thoroughly planning and having a set of things to do for each of the key areas may not be very practical, but determining which area in your life is not being giving enough attention is part of managing your time.

Each area creates the whole you, if you are ignoring one area then you are ignoring an important part of yourself.

It also should not be so daunting a task. It is a very sensible and reasonable approach in solving problems big or small.

A great way of learning to manage your time and improving your personal life is to follow several basic activities.

One of them is to review your goals, whether it be immediate or long-term goals, often.

A way to do this is to keep a list that is always accessible to you.

Always determine which task is necessary or not necessary in achieving your goals and which activities are helping you maintain a balanced life style.

Each and every one of us has a peek time and a time when we slow down, these are our natural cycles. We should be able to distinguish that its time to do the difficult tasks when we are the sharpest.

Learn to say “No”. You actually see this advice often. Heed it even if it involves saying the word to family or friends.

Pat yourself at the back or just reward yourself in any manner for an effective result.

Try and get the cooperation from people around you who are actually benefiting from your efforts.

Don’t procrastinate. Attend to necessary things immediately. Make the main thing, the main thing!

Have a positive attitude and set yourself up for success. But be realistic in your approach in achieving your goals.

Have a record or journal of all your activities. This will help you get things in their proper perspective.

These are the few steps you initially take in becoming a well rounded individual. Personal time management is the art and science of building a better life.

From the moment you the integrate skills used to manage your time into your life, you have opened several options that can provide a broad spectrum of solutions to your personal growth and create more doors for opportunities to knock upon.

With the rise of consumerism, overspending is a major problem even with the people who have an average income. Because of this, most people are now in deep debt burden. It is worsened mainly because a lot of people have little or no knowledge about how to manage their finances. If you take financial management seriously, you would get a lot of benefits by personally controlling your finances. Below are some ideas that will advise you on how to manage personal finances.

The Credit Card Approach

The most popular way of getting credit is through credit cards. Credit cards are very easy to use and you can acquire it without any hassles. You just select any item and then bring it to the cashier and use your card to purchase it. Without carrying any cash, people are encourage to spend without realizing that every swipe of the card will be charge to the card user’s account. Always keep in mind that every use of the card will bring more debt.

Good financial management always means that you take necessary precautions to avoid credit card debts. You should always use the credit card when only necessary and there are no other alternatives. Also, spend only the desired amount when purchasing using your credit card. Keep in mind that credit card companies starts charging penalties on accounts that are over due. This will eventually add up to your debt and will make the situation worst.

You should shop around first before applying for credit card. Always choose the credit card company that charges the least interest rate. Having a low interest rate will give you good savings for other expenses.

What about Debit Card?

One good approach is the use of the debit cards. Debit cards allow you to limit your purchasing amount which is equal to the account. Hence, debit cards have embedded protection against any forms of overspending and eventual loss of control over unnecessary spending.

The Essence of Personal Loans

One source of financial assistance is the personal loans. If personal loans are used constructively, it will give you financial security. If taking personal loans only for the purpose of spending more money that you don’t, it will only fasten your financial decline. If you choose this type of approach, then you should minimize loan cost whenever possible. Always avail personal loans that provide low interest rates so that you can save as much money as you can.

Practice Self Control

You should exchange the habit of too much spending for a habit of wise savings to have financial control. If you have enough money then there is no need for any financial assistance that will push your debt to the limit. Always keep in mind that wise financial management means spending only to what is necessary and should only belong to what is on the budget.

How important is the knowledge of economics in management?
Do I need to go beyond a basic, university economics class to succeed as an executive? How applicable/ practical would my knowledge of economics be if I wanted to be a CEO of a Fortune 500 company (regardless the industry)? Would you say that knowledge of marketing, finance, accounting, supply chain, and organizational behavior be more important? I would appreciate a ranking of the subjects in terms of importance.

Do project managers truly, in all essence, manage projects? This is a rather tricky discussion as, ultimately, all project managers really do is manage a collection of simple to complex tasks. When you really analyze the matter, though, this is not something to simply be taken for granted, because it is in these tasks that all the vital actions take place and transpire.

Managing Tasks on a Project

The function of scoping, planning, controlling, managing risks, and more is all about figuring out what tasks are to be done and making sure they get done (at the right time and in the right order). But without the execution of those tasks, any upstream job function, such as the planning and so forth, are a waste of time. Getting the tasks done is what it is all about; and anyone aspiring to get into project management needs to know how to get tasks done — and how to lead others to do so.

Managing Tasks in a Department

Keeping a department going on a day to day basis involves spending time “at the edge”, or on the exception. It involves being both reactive, as processes are monitored and adjustments are needed, and it involves being proactive, as projects are undertaken to improve and advance the processes that exist within the department. Being good at managing change is being a good planner; but sound task management, at the end of the day, is where all the action that matters takes place. If the task does not require action, then there really is no need for management.

Managing Tasks in an Organization

Action in an organization is a collection of executable tasks within the organization. Making that action take place where it counts the most is the job of upper management. Understanding how to get things done, as well as what, why, when, where, and who, is what leadership is all about. All executives must be good at task management in order to perform effectively.

The Knowledge Economy and Task Management

The knowledge economy has a close relationship with task management; but, unfortunately, people often lose sight of the relationship. In the distant past, it used to be that an individual would be responsible for many tasks, and that is still true in many small businesses. For example, even today, a small proprietor of an auto body shop is usually intimately familiar with every detail of operations, from estimating and business development, to repairing auto bodies, to administration and finance. Much of the high-level-knowledge management work, because it is in one head, is simply executed.

In larger organizations, by contrast, a great deal of collective effort might be put into the process of just turning a bolt. For example, on a manufacturing production line, a worker may need to place a panel and connect it using a couple of bolts. The action of performing this task ends up being a small fraction of the total cost of completion. Behind the task, we will likely find work studies, statistical analysis, much planning and coordination, product design scenarios, and more – all culminating in someone tightening a couple of bolts. Without the tightening of those bolts by hand, all of the upstream work is for naught. Everyone working in “knowledge management” needs to recognize the ultimate goal of their efforts — maintain perspective on the main objective.

Personal Time Management and Task

It is easy to become frustrated with personal time management and, sometimes, even more frustrated with much more complex challenges. It always comes back to task management, no matter what level is being worked. For example, managing a project is simply an umbrella over a more complex set of tasks, and the only thing that really moves the project forward is the completion of those tasks. A similar statement can be made about department management or organization management.

A more complex situation, such as building a system, or building a building, proves the point. In the end, after all the planning, meeting, discussion, and thinking, what is left is a set of tasks that, if completed on time and within budget to proper quality standards, brings about a successful project. So it is simply a collection of everybody’s task lists, alignment with the strategy, and properly prioritizing and sequencing what ties together time and task management. And, in the end, it’s all about task management.

In recent years, numerous pre-built open source content management systems have emerged as viable alternatives to costly proprietary products or custom-built solutions.

Simple-to-install, easy-to-use alternative, convenience, scalability and very low cost are perhaps some of the advantages of open source content management.

To understand the open source content management systems, knowledge of the Enterprise Content Management is a first criterion, since it is consistently a top-ten initiative of CIO’s in the Fortune 1000 and open source content management system is very much related to this ECM.

ECM (Enterprise content management) is a broad term and it implies the acquisition and management of both structured and unstructured content that is dispersed across a number of different repositories, often described as “information silos”.

It is a widely-recognized IT-industry term for software technology that enables organizations to create/capture, manage/secure, store/retain/destroy, publish/distribute, search, personalize, and present/view/print any digital content (e.g. pictures/images, text, reports, video, audio, transactional data, catalog, code).

Many Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems include WCM capabilities.

WCM (web content management) in turn is the management of both structure and unstructured content that is delivered over the Internet, typically via a web site. Web Content Management includes content creation, site management, workflow, access control, and delivery.

With the advent of the new content architectures, the need for replication, federation and decentralized authority has become of utmost necessity. They are allowing each department of the organization to plan for their own needs and to utilize existing hardware at a fraction of the costs.

For this we need to have a proper content management system which is nothing but a system used to manage the content of a Web site.

The content management system is sometimes a web application used for managing websites and web content though in many cases, content management systems require special client software for editing and constructing articles.

The market for content management systems remains fragmented, with many open-source and proprietary solutions available.

Typically, a CMS consists of two elements: the content management application (CMA) and the content delivery application (CDA).

CMA deals with creation, modification, and removal of content from a Web site without needing the expertise in the relevant fields by the content manager or author.

Our interest lies on this content management application (CMA) part which is the other name of open source web content management or opencms which helps to create and manage complex websites easily without knowledge of html.

It refers to a range of technologies and techniques, including portal systems and web-based groupware.

Complex Intranet, Extranet and Internet sites can be quickly and cost-effectively created, maintained and managed by these effective technologies.

Also, complete websites with highly customized layouts and interactive functionality based on Java, JSP, XML and other technology can be created by open source web content management software available in the market.

There are so many organizations that offer true Open Source Enterprise Content Management services- Open Source Document Management, Collaboration, Records Management, Knowledge Management, Web Content Management and Imaging.

Using the open source model those organizations make enterprise content management affordable for many applications that were not possible before.

Web Application Platform, Software License, Stability and Development Activity, User Community, Documentation and Source Code, Web Standards and Accessibility and Suitability and Usability are some of the reasons why you should have open source content management systems for the growth of the company itself.

If you choose wisely, an open source CMS can provide a stable, flexible and cost-effective system that is well-suited for your content management needs.

Finally it gives you the liberty to stay in control of your content management solution.

When it comes to media relations or public relations, most business executives want to be on the cover of the New York Times. However, as many politicians and CEOs will attest to, being on the cover of a newspaper or magazine may be as negative as it can be positive. Building a relationship with the media is important, both for the major stories that can possibly happen and the minor everyday stories that happen on a regular basis. While the media can be tricky, and even on attack mode lately, like all industries they operate on trust and relationships and establishing credibility with them is an important task. Establishing credibility can have a profound impact upon the success of any political campaign, press initiative or marketing campaign.

It’s important to be media friendly. Being media friendly involves being responsive, listening, answering questions and simply being available to the media should they call or contact you. If you can position yourself as a resource, meaning if you can position yourself as someone who not only wants to get into the papers, but who can also offer important information on other stories, you can go a long way towards helping build trust with the media.

You should also be sure to give you media person or contact the tools to be helpful. One thing the media hates is a press person who is basically a glorified receptionist, simply answering phones and passing messages along. Having someone with quality communication skills and who has the knowledge to at least give the media a taste of what they want will make you and your company a far more attractive target for quality stories than the alternative. Most people overlook their public relations people, but good public relations can benefit you, and offer quality reputation management.

Probably the most important tool for reputation management today is the Internet. Using your Website, e-mail and other Internet tools will give you quality reputation management at a relatively inexpensive price. Offering quality information on your Website, using your e-mail quickly and effectively and utilizing other Internet tools such as Digg, Twitter, Facebook and others will give you the kind of online reputation management that will benefit you in the short and the long term.

You should also embrace a policy that increases your transparency. The media loves to report on stories where a company is seemingly hiding something, even if that isn’t the case. If it seems like you’re unwilling to answer questions, or that you are trying to keep certain stories from hitting the press, the media will pick up on that and sometimes create a story out of thin air. This will obviously damage your reputation. Good reputation management sometimes involves commenting on your own mistakes and errors, and allowing your staff to admit mistakes and apologize when appropriate. This isn’t always easy, and every once in a while someone may say too much, but if there’s nothing being hidden you won’t have to worry about a 20/20 exposé.

Integrated document management (IDM) has several dimensions to cope with the variety and quantity of documents that are the characteristics of today’s business. Technology has made it possible to do many things that streamline the capture, storage, processing, and usage of documents.

An integrated document management system has two major objectives:

It Improves business processes through an efficient workflow. Documents support workflows in any organization that cannot work through verbal communications alone. If the documents move speedily and come to the prompt attention of concerned persons, business processes can benefit.

It enhances knowledge management through content management systems that make available all the different kinds of information being generated across the organization.

It’s for achieving these objectives that IDM uses the potential of modern technology, as illustrated below.

Data Capture Methods

Opposed to writing down (or typing) data on paper to create documents, today it’s possible to:

Capture data online through computer controlled machines

Enter transactions directly into the system through devices such as POS (point-of-sale) terminals

Enter data into handheld devices in the field and transmit them directly to the central document management system

Scan paper documents and use OCR (optical character recognition) software to convert the images of text characters into computer-readable characters in ASCII or other formats

Scan the information in paper form directly into relevant database fields

Use barcode readers to transfer information from paper documents, products, packages, etc. directly into the document management or transaction-processing systems

The above data capture methods are in addition to the standard ones such as word processing and data entry from paper documents.

Working with Different Kinds of Data and Data Formats

In addition to standard ASCII or rich text, today’s businesses have to work with image, audio, and video files, each of which can come in open or proprietary formats. All these kinds of documents can contain information essential to managing the business of the organization.

Another dimension is knowledge management. Typically, transaction information was stored separately from administrative documentation that can include correspondence, research reports, and varied other kinds of documents. An integration of all the information into a content management system can help managers tap the accumulated knowledge of the organization for making decisions.

Modern IDM systems adopt approaches that enable them to work with all these kinds of files and formats in a seamless manner.

Major Components of Integrated Data Management

In addition to using methods that are best suited to capture different kinds of data originating at different locations, IDM usually have the following major components:

It stores transaction data in databases optimized for speedy transaction processing and stores all data in data warehouses optimized for querying and analysis. Data warehouses make accumulated organizational knowledge available to users.

It utilizes techniques like data mining that uses the power of computers to identify patterns users may not consider.

It Indexes all information in a manner that makes flexible and fast searches possible.

It centralizes storage of (or accessibility to) all information being generated at various locations.

What are the 9 knowledge areas in Project Management?
This is going to be on the final exam in my Project Management course. I somehow LOST the bit of homework that this information was contained in. I REALLY don't want to call my professor because a) I don't want him to know i lost my homework, & b) I can't stand the man. So, if anyone happens to know the 9 knowledge areas of Project Management, that would help me a lot!
